Senior Creative Director Matthew Goldman has left Bioware. The creative direction of Dragon Age 4 is thus indefinite hands. Goldman had inherited the position of Mike Laid law, who held the line at the first three parts.
Creative Director of Dragon Age 4 goes
Laid law separated from Bioware, when the company 2017 decided a complete restart of development, which aims to focus on online focus and live service elements. After the subsequent failure of Anthem, Publisher EA and Bioware did not seem to be able to stick to this strategy and the character of the game changed under Goldman again.
Goldman, who has already worked as an artist at Bioware titles such as Jade Empire, Knights of the Old Republic and Dragon Age, now also leaves the company, according to an internal e-mail from Managing Director Gary McKay to his team in two-sided consent. In the mail (via Kodak) it is said as follows:
Hi to all,
I hope you are well. I am writing to inform you that Matt Goldman leaves Bioware. We have agreed mutual agreement to go separate ways and today was his last day.
We understand that Matt's farewell concerns both you and the development of the game. Be assured that our commitment to a high-quality Dragon Age game does not get into serrated, and we will not deliver a game that does not match the standards of Bioware.
We, EAS executives included, have absolute trust that the management of the studio and the people who work on this game will continue our vision.
Where the standards mentioned by McKay are currently under Bioware, is difficult to say. While the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition of fans was accepted with kiss hand, Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda in released (and beyond) only came to little counter-love.
Lack of care or prioritization of long-term monetization targets over a clear vision for gameplay and the captivating storytelling, for which bioware is actually famous for frustration.
The fact that creative pillars such as Laid law, Casey Hudson, and now the Matthew Goldman, who also has long time in the company, leave the company, at least not suggests that in large projects such as Dragon Age 4 is developed according to a clear, common direction. When the title should appear is not known. A release before 2023 appears unlikely.
