Nintendo Switch Sports in the test: Play fun meets movement control

test conclusion

Test grade

2.0

Good

"Nintendo Switch Sports" should not trigger such hype as "Wii Sports". But that does not change the fact that the feeling of the game is timeless and the new series branch is also convincing. The mini-game collection is extremely entertaining, especially in local multiplayer mode and is perfect for a few enjoyable rounds with the whole family. The handling is extremely intuitive and very quick. Experienced solo players, however, miss the necessary depth of the game and should quickly feel under demand. Ultimately, only the choice of the highest level of difficulty or attempts at walking in online mode remains here. So is "Nintendo Switch Sports" an absolute mandatory purchase for the Switch? No, but it is a great addition to every game collection and therefore, depending on your play habits, definitely worth a longer look.

"Wii Sports" is a modern phenomenon of video game culture. With over 80 million copies sold, the sweaty mini game collection is still the best-selling game for the Nintendo Wii. The mixture of entry-level friendliness and intuitive movement control made it a mega hit for the whole family. Since April 29, 2022, she has been sending Nintendo back to the virtual sports field: football, badminton or would you prefer a game bowling? In "Nintendo Switch Sports" there are cozy memories of the classic, but does it also set new standards?

fun for the whole family - now also online

"Nintendo Switch Sports" leads you to the Spocco Square - the venue of the six disciplines available at the start. You can choose from football, tennis, bowling, badminton, volleyball and Chanbara. In autumn 2022, Golf was added as a seventh sport. All disciplines go to the split screen alone or with friends.

However, in local multiplayer mode, the number of players is limited to two (for example in football) or four participants (such as the bowling). More participants either require too many joy cons or too much space in front of the television. Important: The multiplayer options only work in TV, but not in handheld mode. "Nintendo Switch Sports" also offers online support so that you can either compete with friends or strangers from all over the world.

old charm in a new guise

The game remains true to the maxim of his quasi predecessor: thanks to the intuitive movement control, all sports are quickly learned. Smaller tutorials and help texts explain the basic functions. With a little practice, all disciplines go quickly. However, a certain inaccuracy when querying the movements remains noticeable and in sports such as volleyball, the distances on the field are not always clearly recognizable due to the camera perspective.

The simple, but quite charming graphic style fits this claim. However, this time you don't necessarily have to play with your old Mii-Avatar, but make your own sports mate (in German: sports comrades) together and dress it.

colorful mix of disciplines

The six available sports offer a good variety of different games. Football stands out here because they use both Joy-Cons to move their athlete and the camera. Actions such as shots take you through the swinging of the right Joy-Con. For the mighty Move "Flugkopfbahn", even stretch both controllers forward. The course of the game is strongly reminiscent of "Rocket League", but is particularly demanding in the higher of the three difficulty levels. Sehr schade: Bislang unterstützt "Nintendo Switch Sports" den aus "Ring Fit Adventure" bekannten Beingurt nur im Shootout-Modus, wo sie wortwörtlich den Ball ins virtuelle Tor kicken müssen.

They only play tennis in doubles. As a solo player, they take over both figures, which works surprisingly well. Otherwise, the discipline offers fun ball sports, in which, especially in multiplayer mode, thanks to various types of stroke, excitement. Badminton is similar, but less varied and therefore a little more boring. Volleyball is also not perfect. Here the game shows you the required movement so that it is very important to the right timing. However, the camera perspective for correct estimation of the position of the ball is not always optimal.

Chanbara replaces boxes from "Wii Sports". Here you hit your opponent with a colorful racket and try to push him into the water from a platform. The struggles are more strategic than at first glance due to the counter mechanics. Very nice: With double and energy blade, variety comes into play thanks to the special attacks.

Bowling remains a classic and plays almost just like in "Wii Sports". By tilting the joy-cons while you get out, you cut the ball. In multiplayer mode, you can use the shared screen so that all gamers can at the same time clear the pins. In special mode, push the ball past moving obstacles. A little more coordination and good timing are required here.

Release: "Nintendo Switch Sports" was released on April 29, 2022 for Nintendo Switch.

Mobas are very in the trend right now on the phone. Later this month Marvel Super was released in several regions, and next year will be League of Legends: Wild Rifts for mobile devices . Apparently, however, Marvel is not enough for Netease, which has announced another MOBA called Extraordinary Ones, who aims for a worldwide market launch for early 2020. It will be available for both iOS and Android as soon as it is released. You can now pre-registration with Google Play. The unique selling point for extraordinary are apparently the 36 characters available at startup, which were designed as exaggerated as possible. According to NetEease, they are all based on oriental mythology, mixed with modern colleges, anime and memen. So, that fits me in any case for the bill for over-the-top. The battlefield will of course be a college campus. In addition, everything seems to be a fairly normal Moba tariff. They start in 5-counter-5 fights, with the long-term goal of destroying the towers ...
